In honor of September being National Recovery Month, we want to help increase awareness about addiction recovery and how it changes lives. Addiction is one of the biggest contributing factors leading to homelessness, and recovery programs are essential to overcoming addiction. Treatment is effective, and people can recover from substance use disorders.
At the Panama City Rescue Mission, our ultimate goal is to end the cycle of homelessness and help improve the lives of those facing difficult circumstances as a result of poverty, addiction, joblessness, and homelessness.
Addiction is epidemic in our community. Substance abuse leads to job loss, family crises, mental illness and homelessness as well as countless other life challenges. Addiction does not discriminate, and affects those in all walks of life, all socio-economic levels, all levels of education and all religious and cultural backgrounds. Most families are affected in one way or another. While it can be difficult to get an accurate count on a local level due to HIPAA laws, national statistics show that nearly 10 percent of the general population struggles with substance abuse and the trend of abuse has risen 36.5% in the last five years. Addiction is everywhere we look in Bay County.
After realizing an overwhelming need to help those afflicted with the challenges of addiction in our area, the Panama City Rescue Mission began the recovery program is 2002. Most of our clients are unable to pay for recovery services, so we rely on the generosity of members of this community to help us continue to offer recovery services.
The program is a comprehensive, residential, year-long addiction recovery program for those who are committed to overcoming their addiction. This is the only program of its kind in the area and only one of two like it in Florida. The program offers a 12- to 14-month strategy that builds recovery techniques in each client through a solid foundation comprised of classes, case management, skills training and discipleship, and culminates by ensuring each student has permanent housing and employment prior to graduation.
Our recovery program follows the biblical model of a community based discipleship – disciples making disciples. We offer comprehensive support through a variety of long-term recovery classes including Addiction Education, Power to Choose, Relapse Prevention, Purpose Driven Life, Anger Resolution, Foundations of Faith, Group Counseling and Coping Skills. The clients are taught by professionally trained facilitators in the field of addictions. In the last phase of the program, all clients find employment and begin a housing search. An aftercare plan is developed, and we track our clients one year beyond graduation with a success rate of approximately 80 percent.
Panama City Rescue Mission differs from secular programs, recognizing true change begins on the inside through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. The difference is the power of the gospel of Jesus Christ, as exhibited by the lives permanently changed through an encounter with the living God.
Since 1972, the Panama City Rescue Mission has provided thousands of nights of shelter, more than a million meals and the basic needs of everyday life. The Mission is best known for its immediate needs program. Our recovery program is where the most positive, permanent impact is seen.
Drug and alcohol addiction is a growing problem in our community and a contributing factor in joblessness, poverty and homelessness. We want to raise awareness to get the community involved in supporting our efforts to put an end to the hopelessness that so many in our community face. Our recovery program is a big part of our efforts to end the cycle of homelessness in our community.
